My family has been one of the greatest influences in my life, encouraging me never to settle, and to always strive for the best in myself. On this journey I have found my true purpose, leading a life dedicated to educating, supporting and serving others.
It was during our spring break trip when I was just 17 that my life changed forever. My parents and I were driving from Kansas City to Arkansas when a car rear-ended us not once, but twice. I was thrown from the car and landed on a barbed wire fence. The accident left me with severe injuries, requiring helicopter transport to a hospital. My parents were sent to a different hospital – not only was I scared and in pain, but I was alone.
It was a traumatic experience that tested me every step of the way, literally. Amidst my recovery, I had to learn how to walk again. Every step I took thereafter held immense value, and I've had appreciation for each step taken since.
However, the accident was only the beginning of my story. My high school chemistry teacher, in a moment of cold indifference, sent two classmates to deliver homework to my hospital room, expecting me to figure it out on my own. I couldn't believe her indifference. That was the start of a clear path for my future.
I was now a starry-eyed college student who dreamed of making a difference in the lives of others through education. However, as I embarked on my college adventure, I felt disheartened by the curriculum. I wanted practical skills and approached each new class with optimism, only to realize the course covered things I would never use. Who cares about the history of little red schoolhouses, I want to learn to teach!
Amidst the uncertainties, I found out life altering news: I was pregnant. Knowing I was going to be a mother changed everything. I moved back home and transferred schools to be closer to my mom. She has been my ultimate inspiration in life. Her honesty, integrity and selflessness are all values I strive to uphold. But she also isn’t afraid to speak her mind and tell you what she really thinks! She knew I didn’t like my classes and that my education was becoming something I forced myself to do rather than enjoyed.
It was at this juncture that my mother, my compass, stepped in. She gave me the permission I needed to follow my heart. She suggested that if I wasn't passionate about what I was learning, I should consider a different path. With her unwavering support, I made the tough decision to take a step back from college and enter the workforce. This was a pivotal moment in my journey.
As a young, single mom, I was doing everything I could to provide a great life for my son, Jalen, and be a role model for him, just as my mom is for me. Juggling the responsibilities of motherhood with the demands of a career was no easy feat. It was my mother’s example that motivated me to strive for excellence in everything I did, balancing it all and making the most of every moment in my day.
I started a career in employee benefits, trying to make a positive impact through my work. It paid the bills, and I received several promotions, but there was a catch. If I chose to start climbing the ladder, I would have to uproot our lives and move to the East Coast. I wasn’t willing to raise my son without our family unit close by. On top of that, I was simply getting bored. I like to be challenged and feel like I am constantly learning; my career simply wasn’t aligning with my long-term goals.
My path eventually led me to real estate in 2009, a field that resonated with my desire to educate people and help them in a meaningful way. Real estate became the canvas through which I could serve my community and make a lasting impact. I want to leave people better than I found them, providing value in any way I can.
Real estate became more than a career; it became a vehicle for change and a platform to provide the care and understanding that every person deserves. When I reflect on my life, I am proud of my ability to take challenging situations and learn and grow from them. I believe that it is through compassion and kindness that we can truly make a positive impact on the world around us.
When not working, I love spending time with my son, my mother and my dog, Jonah. And when I get the chance, I love traveling—Hawaii has a special place in my heart, and I try to visit as often as I can.
In real estate, I have the opportunity to listen to my clients' needs, address their fears and guide them with patience and empathy. I have had the privilege of helping individuals who may not have considered homeownership as a viable option due to their unique backgrounds.
